CB&I - Virtual Refinery

CB&I (Chicago Bridge & Iron Company N.V.) combines process technology with global capabilities in engineering, procurement and construction to deliver comprehensive solutions to customers in the energy and natural resource industries. CB&I has more than 70 proprietary licensed technologies and 1,500 patents and patent applications, CB&I is uniquely positioned to take projects from conceptual design, through technology licensing, engineering and construction and final commissioning.

Drawing upon the global expertise and local knowledge of approximately 17,000 employees in more than 80 locations, CB&I safely and reliably executes projects worldwide.

Much of the work that CB&I does is highly technical in nature and often takes place inside refineries or process facilities, where videotaping and photography are restricted. How do you tell a story of product innovation and demonstrate your advanced engineering technology when you can't photograph it?

  • epic software group met with the marketing department at CB&I and determined that 3D animations delivered as part of a high quality video would be an effective way to showcase their products and services.
  • epic started working with CB&I in 2001 and we have come to know and understand a number of their unique and proprietary processes. We began each project by writing a script, and then moved on to developing a storyboard.
  • epic used voice narration, music, sound, video and high quality 3D graphics to tell their story.
  • Over a 6 year period, epic produced 5 multimedia presentations for CB&I
  • In 2009, epic delivered a complete 3D refinery including a virtual "fly-through" and a series of animations showing various product streams. This presentation included a series of green screen videos that feature a "refinery operations manager" to explain how refinery process units work.

  • CB&I continues to use these multimedia videos for sales presentations, at trade shows, and online.
  • The CB&I Virtual Refinery project is showcased on the home page of the corporate web site.

"CB&I has been pleased with epic's creativity and responsiveness, which is why we've engaged them for a number of projects. The Virtual Refinery was a complex undertaking that challenged their staff, and they came through with flying colors."
