When Dewayne King released his first mystery novel "The Volunteer" he came to epic to help him create a movie trailer to bring to life several of the key characters in the book. The story revolves around Frank Tipton, a Houston homicide detective, who has seen far too many gruesome murders. Tipton is a man who goes to work every day in underbelly of the Bayou City. The things he has seen and the people he has interacted with during his 30 plus years on the force, has given him nightmares, and left him a cold angry man.
His life and career spiral out of control when his trainee partner is killed during a routine investigation. Tipton feels personally responsible for her death and takes early retirement. He turns to the bottle to cope with his depression until he is asked to volunteer and to help train a young detective in Magnolia, Texas. A women with a striking resemblance to the partner he just lost. But all is not what it appears to be in this sleepy country town. Can Tipton muster the strength to solve a series of murders, or will this case be the one that finally takes him down?
King does an excellent job creating a rich story filled with characters that you really care about. If the story feels authentic, it may be because King's dad was a Houston Police officer and growing up he experienced what cops are up against first hand. While the names and characters are factious, King uses real places and events to weave a tale that makes this novel a real page turner.
Check out the trailer, and stay tuned for his next page turner.
